Hazel’s Story
Our first baby was born March 2020. As new parents, we didn’t know much about newborn screening other than it was a routine test done after birth.
Our daughter was a month early, so our first week as parents was a little chaotic; the last thing we thought about was the newborn screening we did at the hospital. The Friday of our first week home we received a call from the Community Health Clinic. We were told by one of the nurses our daughter had tested positive for PKU on the newborn screen and that we needed to come to the clinic now for more testing. We rushed there not knowing anything about PKU and praying our daughter would be okay.
The doctors, nurses, and dietitians at CHC talked us through everything we needed to know about PKU and what that would look like for our daughter. With this amazing team and the newborn screening, we have been able to give her all the medical attention she needs.
